AATSEEL 2007 Annual Conference, Chicago, Illinois, 27-30 December 2007

The AATSEEL National Meeting is a forum for scholarly exchange of ideas in all areas of Slavic and East/Central European languages, literatures, linguistics, cultures, and pedagogy. The Program Committee invites scholars in these and related areas to form panels around specific topics, organize roundtable discussions, propose forums on instructional materials, and/or submit abstracts of individual presentations for the 2007 Conference to be held in Chicago, IL. The conference regularly includes panels in the following areas:

    Linguistics

Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Historical Linguistics, Discourse Analysis, Pragmatics, Semantics, Dialectology, Sociolinguistics, Cognitive Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, and Linguistics and Pedagogy.

    Pedagogy and Second Language Acquisition

Second Language Acquisition, Empirical Studies in Language Learning, Study Abroad, Teaching of Individual Skills (pronunciation, reading, listening, writing, speaking), Content-based Instruction (in film, history, politics, culture, literature, etc.), Curriculum Design, Language Teaching for Special Purposes, Teaching of Languages other than Russian (Polish, Czech, Croatian, Romanian, etc.), Use of Technology in Language Teaching.

    Making Specific Panel Proposals

In addition to these general areas of conference activity, the Program Committee welcomes other proposals for panels, roundtables, and forums on instructional materials. Panel chairs or organizers should contact one of the committee members below to declare a panel, roundtable or forum. Declared panels are listed on this website. We will continue to accept panel proposals until 1 August. The program committee encourages panel and roundtable organizers to take an active part in recruiting participants, including discussants, to their events.

    Submission of Abstracts

The program committee invites panel organizers to shape their own complete panels and to submit abstracts from all authors in the panel as a group. In that case, the Program Committee will submit all the abstracts organized for the panel to the same peer reviewers; each abstract will be reviewed on its own merits within the context of the intended panel. If authors for such a panel submit their abstracts separately, they need only indicate the name of the panel when they submit the abstract. The Program Committee will consult with panel organizers about the composition of panels and will not break up panels shaped by organizers.

If an abstract author sends his/her abstract to a panel organizer or panel chair, the author should verify whether the panel organizer/chair intends to submit abstracts as a group to the appropriate Division Head. If the organizer/chair is not submitting the abstracts as a group, the author should submit the abstract directly to the appropriate division head (see below). Panel chairs are not permitted to read a paper on the panel that they are chairing.

Scholars are welcome to submit abstracts for a specific panel (or panels) or to the conference as a whole. The Program Committee will find a panel for every abstract accepted.

Abstract deadlines are 15 April and 1 August. The first deadline allows for revision and resubmission of abstracts, should reviewers deem that necessary. The second deadline does not allow for resubmission. Abstracts should be no longer than approximately 300 words (including select bibliographic citations in the standard format in the respective discipline). Detailed guidelines for abstracts and published program abstracts from past years are available on the AATSEEL website.

The Program Committee notes that all conference participants must be AATSEEL members in good standing for 2007 or request a membership waiver. Membership (which is based on the calendar year) can be renewed by regular mail or on-line on the AATSEEL website. Authors must be members in good standing or have a waiver in order to receive the results of abstract review.

    AATSEEL Membership and Conference Preregistration.

In conformity with AATSEEL's bylaws, all conference participants must be members of AATSEEL in good standing and must preregister for the conference by 30 September 2007. In particular:
    1. AATSEEL Membership: Notification of acceptance of abstracts will be sent only to AATSEEL members in good standing.
    2. Conference Registration: Conference participants who have not preregistered by 30 September may be deleted from the conference program.
    3. Exceptions to Membership Requirement: Non-North-American scholars and non-Slavists may apply to the chair of the Program Committee for exemption from the membership requirement, which will be determined on an individual basis. Please request exemption from the membership requirement when you submit your abstract, so as not to delay acceptance.
    4. Exemptions to Conference Registration: Colleagues from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union for whom the conference cost would prove a significant financial hardship may apply for exemption from the registration requirement, which will be determined on an individual basis. Please request exemption from the registration requirement when you submit your abstract, so as to avoid being excluded from the program for failure to register. In addition, poets participating in the Poetry Reading who are not Slavists and are not taking part elsewhere in the program are exempt from the conference registration requirement, as well as the AATSEEL membership requirement.
