Smolny College, St. Petersburg, Russia seeks a Dean/Associate Director, to be situated in St. Petersburg, Russia. Smolny is a joint venture between St. Petersburg State University and Bard College (New York). Smolny opened in October 1999, and is Russia’s first liberal arts college. Each year more than 100 students, mostly from Russia, enter Smolny, which offers a four-year baccalaureate degree from St. Petersburg State and Bard. The new dean will begin as soon as possible, but before academic year 2009-2010 opens in September.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to, and vision of, rigorous, progressive, inter-disciplinary undergraduate education. S/he will hold a Ph.D. in the humanities, social sciences, or sciences, with a record of academic accomplishment and excellence, and will have a familiarity with, and commitment to, liberal arts education. S/he will have fluency in written and spoken Russian and English. Previous administrative experience, including staff supervision and personnel evaluation, desirable; familiarity with the Russian university system necessary; fund-raising experience a plus.

Located within Saint Petersburg State University, Smolny is accredited in both Russia and the U.S. It offers programs in the humanities, social sciences, and arts. The course content is a mixture of distinctively Russian and international elements; students fulfill general education requirements and have broad latitude in constructing their course of study.
